We recently had a customer call in for a Barn Light warranty due the installation completed by their electrician. The customer’s door opened directly under the shade when originally installed however over time the weatherboard mounting gave way and dipped slightly. This caused the door to hit on the Cast Guard & Glass / Atomic accessory our customer had opted for originally, snapping the die-casted aluminium stem that held the cast guard in place.

The electrical had already been run to the area, so there was no desire to change position the electrical was supplied to, plus the prospect of attempting waterproofing/repair/repainting the weatherboard so it “looked like it did originally” wasn’t an available option. The weathering of outdoor paint usually makes “repairs” unsightly without painting the entire area, but that’s a story for another time.
What were our customer’s options?
- The first available option was to remove the gooseneck, shade and all and find another outdoor wall light to install in the area. The cost of removing the light, buying another, then reinstalling added to the cost considerably. At some stage our “replacement culture” says replacing it provides less headaches than repairing. We’ve all done it, but I’d prefer we didn’t.
- Order a new replacement cast guard from Barn Light Australia and reinforce the wall mounting to be sure it doesn’t slip again. This is more of a “hope and pray” than a realistic solution however more often than not, the tradesperson will do just as the customer requests even if its not the best course of action.
- Call Barn Light Australia and see if we might have a custom gooseneck, an accessory, or the ability to make a slight modification to an existing gooseneck to fit in the area needed.
The customer took #3 – We charged a flat rate to replace the whole unit including the engineering that created their custom gooseneck arm.
