If you’re looking for a vintage-inspired pendant light to fill any space in your home – reminiscent of farmhouse & factory lighting from the 1900’s, suspended by durable black chain.
Our Old Dixie presents the best of industrial lighting designs, available in three unique sizes – We’ve got an Old Dixie Warehouse Shade to suit your modern design vibes. If you are looking to create a bit of “Oooh” over a kitchen island with a bare bulb, select our 28cm Old Dixie (coming soon!) to create a visual focal point without taking up precious views. Our 33cm Old Dixie borders presents as a shallow bowl, emitting a much larger lighting dispersal, making every room flooded with warm light. If you need a directed, yet soft light – our 43cm Old Dixie presents as both a semi-deep bowl, ideally installed outdoors over large porch areas.
As a “modern styled pendant”, the hard-edges, flared, and cascading style of the Old Dixie’s industrial design provides a level of sophistication unlike our traditional competition. Lovingly crafted by our metal spinner using a decade old steel mold, you can be assured the build quality against cheap imitations. Whilst Chain Pendant Lights are common in Australia, rarely are they manufactured well enough to stand the test of time
A common request – Our customers know they want a “nice pendant light” but don’t know the typical space to where it should be installed. Here’s a few options based on our typical customer installations.
While it should be its own page, an industrial chain hang suspension grants pendants plenty of versatility. Hanging your new Old Dixie Chain Hung Pendant closer to the ground provides for an indefinitely more intimate lighting scheme, or must higher up for general lighting at a (children’s?) party where that kitchen table needs to be relocated. Rather than have to call an electrician out, you need only remove and resit the included Quick link for a new lighting style. Considering other Old Dixie mountings? Check the Old Dixie Warehouse Shade page.
Our use of outdoor rated, die-cast assemblies means you are a quick link away from the perfect lighting solution for an event. Our Old Dixie Chain Hung Pendants is comprised of classic warehouse style with a wide light dispersal. The 43cm Old Dixie is better designed for a “deep bowl” style such as over the kitchen benches, or areas that require brighter lighting. We “Silicon Plug” all of our Chain Hung Pendant Lights (from 2022!), so all pendants are outdoor rated IP44 as a standard (with dry ceilings!)
Whilst not designed to withstand high winds or areas prone to gusting, our Old Dixie Chain Hung Pendants shouldn’t be ruled out in areas where that would otherwise rule out a standard barn pendant light. Looking for a rigid stem pendant for outdoors? Check out our Old Dixie Stem Pendant, which has the same shape and style as our Chain Hung Pendant but with a solid stem. Last but not least, our Old Dixie Gooseneck Barn Light sets the standard, you’ll want find a wall to affix to, like the rest of our Gooseneck Barn Lights!
The Ceiling Canopy / Ceiling Rose
We supply our “Stem Canopy” – a 11cm Diameter Die-Casted Ceiling Rose that comes with female loop pre-installed. The ceiling rose is supplied in Black Ace (EBA) Finish, and is designed to take the full weight of the fixture.
Adaptor Bracket
We provide a steel Adaptor Bracket with threaded holes located at the left and right of the adaptor bracket. 8-32 x 3/4″ Pan Philips Screws are supplied (roughly M4 x 20mm long) in the same colour as the canopy, ensuring the entire fixture, and fixings appears the same colour on the ceiling.
Recyclable Packaging?
Yup, everything is then packaged into a brown or white paper bag and marked with your colour, size, installation instructions, and any applicable warnings.
Outdoor Rated Cables
Our Standard Black Cord [SBC] / Standard White Cord [SWC] are designed for outdoor usage.
Indoor-Only Cables
All other types of cables are designed for internal use only. This may be due to single insulation (French Braided Twist), or Polyester jackets (Black Cloth Cord) that contain non uv-treated cables.
Cable Length
We cut all of our cable off 100m spools. The supplied length of 1m is provided for all cable styles. If you require additional lengths further than 2m long (3.5m TOTAL), we can supply a quotation separately. Cable supplied always has a “little bit of slack” to enable the electrician to complete their installation.
Indoor Rated Canopy
For all of our Chain Hung Pendants, a dry location must be selected for the installation/electrical termination point. This means that water cannot be present in the immediate area at any stage.
We use a outdoor-rated silicon that ensures water cannot enter the electrical assembly (through where the cable enters) through the lighting fixture. It is quite literally “plugged” prior the electrical assembly being completely assembled.
Yes. Your electrical termination must be completed into/using an Outdoor Rated Enclosure (as your electrician to supply) so that water-proofing is completed.
For example; An outdoor alfresco area may have the chain-hung pendant fully exposed to the weather.
The lighting fixture is water-proofed externally, the lighting fixture’s electrical connection point is terminated within either A) Recessed, dry location (i.e. under a roof). or B) within an outdoor-rated conduit box.
The Chain can be “Hooked” wherever desired, with the electrical terminated in either location A or B.
Outdoor Rated Pendants (IP44) and up, can be always placed in full weather conditions so long as the ceiling is “dry”.
All Barn Light Lighting takes a common “E27 / Edison Screw / ES / Screw Bulb” that you’ll find at your local hardware, or grocery store. If you’d prefer to purchase our LED Bulbs, the supplier (VintageLED.com.au) provides a three-year warranty.
Yes – We use a ceramic Edison Screw (E27) Lampholder.
Whats.. Better? Ceramic?!
Our ceramic/porcelain Lampholders are simply designed to take as much heat as possible (Yes, We build better lighting than our competitors) without effecting the mounting / electrical cabling. Our outdoor pendant lighting is based on decades old, reliable, vintage engineering.
Standard Outdoor Barn Lights – 100W
If you select the “default” arrangement which is simply marked as “Edison Screw Lampholder (No Bulbs Supplied)” with Standard Black Cord – You’ll have the ability to install a 100W Bulb.
Atomic Barn Lighting / Indoor Rated Cables – 60W
If you select an Accessory such as “Atomic Cast Guard” or French Braided Twist – When installed with Glass, you’ll be limited as the sealed glass enclosure becomes a literal heat-trap, resulting is a lesser Wattage rating (60W)
You can opt to NOT install the glass at your discretion however Atomic “Fully Integrated LEDs” required the installation of glass at all times.
What you *may* want to know if considering purchasing elsewhere
Our competitors will be supplying you with a thermo-plastic lamp-holder which becomes brittle & cracks over time, with a maximum of 60W being typical (also.. not organic / not recyclable). Need to light up an area? Nope – You’ll now need to install spotlights to find your car in Winter.
Smart Bulbs – When you need a kaleidoscope of colour.
Yes, our lighting is fully compatible however we suggest that you try one bulb in the most furthest away location from your wireless signal. We manufacture with Aluminium, and you’ll likely install your new Barn Lights onto Brick or Concrete walls. Neither of these materials are ideal for wireless signals to penetrate through so tread cautiously.
Yup – We hear you, this is sounding too good to be true for a lighting company.
Frankly (the short answer is “Yes”), we could write a page about this – so we did.. -> Are Barn Lights Dimmable?
We keep all of our Lighting Installation Instructions available from the one page for future proofing
Yes – We have been developing our lighting for years and it is ready to integrate with any sensor on the market today. Your electrician, or related professional will work closely with you to determine which solution best suits your needs, but don’t worry: to put it simply, buying a Barn Light is the easy part of your lighting plan.
The types of sensors available on the market today are microwave (movement), lux meters (during dusk-to dawn periods), and PIR Sensors for night (heat sensor). The best solution for you will depend upon your local conditions, thus supplying a motion sensor isn’t under the purview of the lighting products we provide.
For example: If you live in an area with nocturnal life, you wouldn’t want to install a motion sensor in your backyard covering a large amount of area. For similar reasons, you wouldn’t want a heat sensor covering the sunset as stone holds heat for a long period of time. Some video cameras these days now have a “pre-determined scope” or area of control to focus on, ignoring all else such as a driveway, ignoring the surrounds.
If you are wanting to install a light *sometimes* when entertaining, you’ve got a portable, chain hung pendant to solve that problem.
If you are concerned about the fixtures swaying the breeze, our chain hung lights are resistant to light breezes, otherwise we’d recommend our stem pendant lights for windier conditions as a fixed installation.
If you’ve got a ceiling that may have some additional protection required, consider an upgrade to our optional Atomic Cast Guards which increase the IP Rating to IP55 and provide an interesting focal point.
For the Kitchen
You’ll want Suspended Chain Pendants like our The (35cm) Universal, (40cm) Original, or (40cm) Wesco for kitchen areas.
A typical 1.8m-2.1m (x 900|1200mm) Island bench should have 2x kitchen island pendants installed equally spaced provide sufficient light during the daytime and evening when using the larger shades, smaller shades 3x. For every 400mm of space, the addition of one extra pendant is preferable. The higher you install your pendants, the greater light dispersal, the less pendants are required. Whilst balance makes sense, its not always easy to visualise online!
Our Chain Pendants would typically be installed over the kitchen island bench rather than over the dining room table.
For the Bathroom
“The smaller, the better” – Sparkie dependant, we insist upon using the cast guard & glass to reduce water exposure and diffuse light more evenly (Atomic Cast Guard drops the bulb to just before the shade rim in most shade models). A unique benefit for these units is the addition of optional Atomic Cast Guards which increase the IP Rating to IP55.
We’d normally recommend our stem pendant lights or flush mount ceiling lights outdoor areas where wind-resistance might cause issues.
For Workshops – You’ll definitely feel a industrial vibe once installed, and spend more time in the workshop that before!
For Walkways, a shorter pendant drop will provide less momentum for chain hung pendants to swing.
For Garages, a long chain suspended pendant will always look aesthetically pleasing while providing a decent quality light.
