The Atomic Industrial takes us back to the US Space Race and Atomic Age, with a design the has changed little since the 60s.
Enveloped in vapor-proof glass and metal cages, The Atomic allows you to light up a functional area while projecting the no-nonsense message of industrial design.
The Atomic states that this place was built to last, and to survive the cold war.
Recent History
These industrial cage wall lights are known for this industrial nautical styling normally associated with ship building and salvaging. A large number of authentic brass units arrived in Australia over the past five years via Indian ship breakers, these units were typically available at very high prices and in varying styles. Although unique, these styles unfortunately were only supplied in small quantities leading to a large influx of one-off units. While the quality of these products will more often exceed the quality of comparable units, the unfortunate effect of having an “unbalanced” styling made houses appear to resemble the local opportunity shop more than the home they leave work for.
Our Atomic Sconces are manufactured here in Victoria, Australia for Australian conditions. We manufacture these units to be rugged enough for both indoor and outdoor use (IP55). If you desire an industrial, rustic, and/or nautical styling to your abode, or a combination of these three, our Atomic Industrial Guard Sconce is for you. Our rustic wall sconces can be used anywhere you desire, such as your garage, bathroom, or backyard using a standard duty, heavy duty, or nautical wire cage to protect the glass from damage.
Original Design
Our Atomic Industrial design has changed little since developed during the US Space Race that sparked the Atomic Age and that of the needs for vapor proof outdoor caged lights. While one might consider this a classic design, the combined quality and durability makes for an Industrial Style – Products that are built to last. Constructed from solid die cast aluminium from our own overseas facilities, these industrial wall lights were developed to be used in conjunction in various complimenting styles – Goosenecks, Pendants, Stems, Sconces.
Dependable and Modular – Install the simple Atomic Industrial or choose from the various adapted ranges we have to offer below; located at the bottom of this page.
There are imitations, there will be cheaper products, there won’t be a higher quality product than the one you buy here from Barn Light Australia. If you can’t find a supplier with a few “other” similar styles, you know what you see here.
Things you should know.
Unlike cheap imitations, The Atomic Industrial Cast Guard has the capability of being easily threaded into the base for easy access to the glass and bulb. If you chose to install without the supplied grub screws, you can change the light-bulb without tools. If you’d prefer a long lasting LED light source, we recommend our Atomic LED option. Sold at our cost price for a better environment.
Barn Light Australia does not resell Davey Lighting (UK) products, nor do we supply Fat Shack Vintage (FSV) products.
We don’t resell our lighting anywhere via distributors and so all products sold are unique to us – If you find anyone calling their products “Barn Lights” you know where they got the name from.
Product Measurements
Height | Projection From Wall |
33cm | 24cm |
The Backing Plate.
Our Hand Finished Aluminium Wall Sconce Plate [SCO-WBP2 / SCO-WBP3] is 160mm in diameter and projects 48mm off the wall.
The Sconce / Gooseneck / Support Arms.
Our Sconce Arms are manufactured from Brass-plated, clear coated, rolled steel. We prepare the surfaces and then powdercoat a top-coat of your selected colour. Whilst we use aluminium for every other facet of our manufacturing process, the structural integrity of steel is required for these wall light models.
Wall Fixing Bracket
We provide a steel “Cross Bar” with M10x1.0mm threaded in the centre. This fixing permits customers with different mounting surfaces (and angles, like weatherboards) to “reblock” the backing without needing to modify the product to suit. The ability to install the crossbar over two surfaces makes these installation advantageous for non-recessed electrical terminations.
To affix this bracket to your structure using any of your typical fixings (think Timber Screws/Concrete/Masonry Fixings), then affix your Sconce Backing Plate using our supplied 75mm Threaded Nipple A supplied, colour-matched decorative Brass Locknut finishes your new design
Waterproofing GasketÂ
We supply an Australian Made, closed cell (waterproofing) gasket designed to fit between your Wall Sconce Plate & Mounting Surface. The gasket is 5mm thick, 165mm in diameter (5mm larger than the sconce plate) to assist in positioning with a 30mm centre hole for electrical to be terminated within the sconce plate.
Recyclable Packaging?
Yup, everything is then packaged into a brown or white paper bag and marked with your colour, size, installation instructions, and any applicable warnings
All Barn Light Lighting takes a common “E27 / Edison Screw / ES / Screw Bulb” that you’ll find at your local hardware, or grocery store. If you’d prefer to purchase our LED Bulbs, the supplier (VintageLED.com.au) provides a three-year warranty.
Yup – We use a ceramic Edison Screw (E27) Lampholder.
Whats.. Better? Ceramic?!
Our ceramic/porcelain Lampholders are simply designed to take as much heat as possible (Yes, We build better lighting than our competitors) without effecting the mounting / electrical cabling. Our outdoor wall lighting is based on decades old, reliable, vintage engineering.Â
Standard Outdoor Barn Lights – 100W
If you select the “default” arrangement which is simply marked as “Edison Screw Lampholder (No Bulbs Supplied)” – You’ll have the ability to install a 100W Bulb.
Atomic Barn Lighting – 60W
If you select an Accessory such as “Atomic Cast Guard” – When installed with Glass, you’ll be limited to 60W as the sealed glass enclosure becomes a literal heat-trap. You can opt to NOT install the glass at your discretion however Atomic “Fully Integrated LEDs” required the installation of glass at all times.
What you *may* want to know if considering purchasing elsewhereÂ
Our competitors will be supplying you with a thermo-plastic lamp-holder which becomes brittle & cracks over time, with a maximum of 60W being typical (also.. not organic / not recyclable). Need to light up an area? Nope – You’ll now need to install spotlights to find your car in Winter.
Smart Bulbs – When you need a kaleidoscope of colour.
Yes, our lighting is fully compatible however we suggest that you try one bulb in the most furthest away location from your wireless signal. We manufacture with Aluminium, and you’ll likely install your new Barn Lights onto Brick or Concrete walls. Neither of these materials are ideal for wireless signals to penetrate through so tread cautiously.
Yup – We hear you, this is sounding too good to be true for a lighting company.
Frankly (the short answer is “Yes”), we could write a page about this – so we did.. -> Are Barn Lights Dimmable?
Single Arm Sconces; INS-0009B
Dual Arm Sconces; INS-0009A
Wall Mounting Instructions: INS-0009
Yes – We have been developing our lighting for years and it is ready to integrate with any sensor on the market today. Your electrician, or related professional will work closely with you to determine which solution best suits your needs, but don’t worry: to put it simply, buying a Barn Light is the easy part of your lighting plan.
The types of sensors available on the market today are microwave (movement), lux meters (during dusk-to dawn periods), and PIR Sensors for night (heat sensor). The best solution for you will depend upon your local conditions, thus supplying a motion sensor isn’t under the purview of the lighting products we provide.Â
For example: If you live in an area with nocturnal life, you wouldn’t want to install a motion sensor in your backyard covering a large amount of area. For similar reasons, you wouldn’t want a heat sensor covering the sunset as stone holds heat for a long period of time. Some video cameras these days now have a “pre-determined scope” or area of control to focus on, ignoring all else such as a driveway, ignoring the surrounds.
Older homes typically have newer exterior decking which drops the installation point from 1.8m to any deviation, causing issues obtaining replacement lighting, further “Coach Lamps” and similar styles (wall sconces typically push light up!) are usually installed lower than desired once lighting styles are changed.
We recommend measuring the area to ensure you’ve got enough space for the (over-) arching steel arms AND enough room for a drop from the mounting point.
If you’ve got the space for both, our Industrial Wall Sconces like The Original, Astro, Old Dixie Wall Lights. A unique benefit for these units is the addition of optional Atomic Cast Guards which increase the IP Rating to IP55.
If you’d rather a larger light – You’d likely prefer our range of Gooseneck Wall Lights are this is what Gooseneck Barn Lights were originally manufactured for.Â
